Fuller didnât know how long he had stared out the window, but eventually he remembered that he and Andrews still had a lot of work to do. In fact, they wouldnât eat until it was done, and the job would take them the rest of their duty cycle.
Fuller turned to his friend and said, âAndrews, we have to be gettingââ
âWhatâs that?â Andrews said, pointing out the window.
Fuller looked where his friend was pointing and saw that there was something in orbit after all. Two somethings, in fact. Large satellites, he guessed. No, they were moving too fast, seeming to come from Donatu Vâs northern polar region. That was significant, he realized. It would make them difficult for sensors to see.
âThere arenât supposed to be any large ships out here,â Andrews said.
But these ships werenât just large, they were huge. He didnât recognize the type until the ships changed course slightly, showing him a three-quarter angle instead of the head-on view he had seen initially. His Starfleet training kicked in immediately, and he had no trouble identifying ships with that silhouette.
âOh my God, theyâre Klingon,â Fuller said. There were loud gasps from the other people in the room as they made the same identification. His first thought was that it had to be a mistake. The ships had to be off course, or in some kind of trouble.
Two of them in trouble? His mind replied. Two Klingon battle cruisers?
Then he saw that the ships were on an intercept course with the Endeavour. His mind did a quick calculation: they were almost in weapons range.
All of that took barely seconds. Does the captain know? And whereâs the red alert? he thought. Then he saw a telltale flash outside the window. The shields were being raised. A split second later, two things happened virtually simultaneously. Red alert sounded, and the nose of the lead Klingon vessel lit up.
What happened next happened very quickly. Fuller saw the torpedo emerge from the Klingon ship. He did another quick calculation, trying to figure the range, the speed of the torpedo, and the time it would take the Endeavourâs shields to fully deploy. In the end, there was no time to finish the mental calculation.
And no need.
Fuller saw a flare as the torpedo tore through the shipâs emerging shields and continued, unaffected, straight for the Endeavour. Fuller had an instant to think, The ship is going to get hit. Then he realized that the torpedo was heading straight for him and the others in the dining room. Instinctively, he started to duck. Before he could finish the movement, there was a blinding flash outside the window as the deck shook under his feet.
Theyâve hit us, he thought. The torpedo had missed the dining room, but it had come close. In fact, a loud hiss of air told him that the dining room would not be safe for long. âEverybody out, weâre decompressing,â he said. Fuller could see that the bulkhead had buckled slightly near the ceiling. âEngineering,â he said to Andrews, who nodded.
